Abstract

Dr. Hugh Hampton Young (1870-1945) was an American physician who revolutionized the field of Urology, being recognized as one of the main responsible for developing and establishing the discipline. His contributions were numerous, including founding The Brady Urological Institute, developing pioneering surgical approaches to prostate pathologies, performing the first radical prostatectomy, designing innovations in pediatric urology, and conducting research on venereal disease. Furthermore, outside the urological field, his enormous curiosity led him to identify the discoverer of general anesthesia through ether, a historical contribution of enormous importance. During his illustrious trajectory, he came into contact with eminent figures inside and outside medicine, having been responsible for the urologic treatment of American President Woodrow Wilson. Thus, to highlight the life and legacy of Hugh Young, a literature review was carried out, the first in the Portuguese language. This effort aims to bring his legacy to a wider audience, redeem his contributions, inspire future generations of medical professionals through his example of professionalism and dedication, and recount his fascinating life journey.
